Is there a website where I can view a death certificate for free?
Q. my sister died in 1974 at 9 months old, the circumstances surrounding her death are very mysterious. I want to look at the death certificate to see what is listed as cause of death. I found websites that will let you do a search for free but not view the actual death certificate. This has been bothering me all my life and I would like to know what really happened to my sister. My family will not give me straight answers so I am on my own here.

A. I assume you are in the United States. If so, you can get a copy of the death certificate. Contact your local vital stats office to find out the details on what they require for you to get that record, but since you are immediate family, you are legally allowed to obtain it. Usually, you just need to provide your ID, some identifying information on your sister (name, date of birth, date of death, parents names, location of death), and a fee of less than $20, probably closer to about $10 or so. It really is pretty simple to obtain.
