Mail, or post, is a method for transmitting information and tangible objects, wherein written documents, typically enclosed in envelopes and also small packages are delivered to destinations around the world. Anything sent through the postal system is called mail or post.

In principle, a postal service can be private or public. Governments often place restrictions on private postal delivery systems. Since the mid 19th century national postal systems have generally been established as government monopolies with a fee on the article prepaid. Proof of payment is often in the form of adhesive postage stamps, but postage meters are also used for bulk mailing.

Postal systems often have functions other than sending letters. In some countries, the postal system also has some authority over telephone and telegraph systems. In others, postal systems allow for savings accounts and handling applications for passports.

Early postal systems

Many early post systems consisted of fixed courier routes. Here, a post house on a postal route in 19th century Eastern Europe

The art of communication by written documents carried by an intermediary from one person or place to another almost certainly dates back nearly to the invention of writing. However, development of formal postal systems occurred much later. The first documented use of an organized courier service for the diffusion of written documents is in Egypt, where Pharaohs used couriers for the diffusion of their decrees in the territory of the State (2400 BC). This practice almost certainly has roots in the much older practice of oral messaging and may have been built on a pre-existing infrastructure.

How much postage is required to mail a large envolope?
Q. Yea...How much postage is required for one of those 8 x 11 envolopes, or something close to those dimentions, (I don't know the exact dimentions). This is within the country from Ohio to Florida.

A. it depends upon the weight... anywhere between 1.17-15.00... you cant judge it solely by size... take it to the post office. p.s. in the continental US it's not about distance either... stamps are flat rate.

How much postage do I need to send my absentee ballot in Contra Costa County, CA?
Q. I have to send back my absentee ballot for the CA presidential primary, but it doesn't say anywhere in the instructions how much postage is required, and I can't find the information online. I know it's not pre-paid and some places say it requires anywhere from 60-97 cents. Anyone who voted in the same area remember how much the postage was? Thanks. OK, so I went to the post office and it's just one stamp.

A. I am an absentee voter in Santa Clara County, and my ballot requires 58 of postage. Since all California ballots are the same for this election, yours should be the same.

What is the best way to figure out postage, when selling an item on ebay?
Q. I am new to selling on ebay, and I wanted to know how much to charge for postage, itstead of running every item to the post office to be weighed before hand.
Asked by Chiroskafan - Mon Jul 6 00:10:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It actually depends on how you are going to ship it. If you are going to ship it USPS you would need to go to www.usps.com and you can calculate your shipping there by zip code, size of package, and weight of package. If you are shipping UPS, there are calculators there as well at www.ups.com. If you are selling an item on Ebay, and have PAYPAL, and the buyer has paid via PAYPAL, you can go directly from PAYPAL and they will figure the postage for you and you can even print your label right there and the charges deducted from your PAYPAL account. Hope this helps.
