Stamp collecting is the collecting of postage stamps and related objects, such as covers (envelopes or packages with stamps on them). It is one of the world's most popular hobbies, with estimates of the number of collectors ranging up to 20 million in the United States alone. A philatelist often does, but need not, collect the objects of study, nor is it necessary to closely study what one collects. Many casual collectors enjoy accumulating stamps without worrying about the tiny details. The creation of a large or comprehensive collection, however, may require some philatelic knowledge. Stamp collectors are an important source of revenue for some small countries who create limited runs of elaborate stamps designed mainly to be bought by stamp collectors. The stamps produced by these countries far exceed the postal needs of the countries. Some collectors have taken to philatelic investment. From Wikipedia under the

One has to understand that there are coin collectors and currency collectors then there are numismatists who not only collect but also study and know the history of the coins or currency they have or would like to have. The same thing goes with stamps. philatelist's know the history and study stamps while collectors just collect them. Give the powers to be time and they will make up a name for currency collectors. I'm not a stamp collector.. nor am I a big Star Wars fan (more of a trekkie - but that's controversial and totally off the topic). Well while standing in yet another long Monday line at the post office. I noticed a flyer regarding these Star Wars stamps coming out in May 25th. My question is to all the stamp collectors out there - what is your take on these? I think they are rather cool and wonder how much they'll be worth in a short amount of time or will it take time for them to be worth anymore than their face value. Also where do you go to check how much a stamp you have is worth .. And where do you keep your collection. Thanks Asked by Vboy303 - Tue May 15 01:41:30 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The stamps you see displayed at the post office are not likely to ever be worth much more than their cost. Many people will buy them, so there will be a large supply in the market, enough to handle the demand. The post office is likely to keep selling them for at least six months, unless they sell very rapidly and the post office decides not to reprint. What may very well be a good investment is the set of three Star Wars Express Mail envelopes available only by mail order. Because these cost over $40 each set, not many people will buy them, and they are only on sale for a few months. After they are no longer available, there may be a big demand from people who later decide they want them. Many public libraries have stamp catalogs that… [cont.] Answered by Brandenburg 5 - Tue May 15 03:24:01 2007 Are there any agencies or people who send free stamp to the people interested in collecting stamps?
