Why would GM or Chrysler want to have less dealers to sell their product?
Q. GM & Chrysler are in bankruptcy because they can't sell enough cars to make a profit. GM & Chrysler does not sell us their cars. The independent dealer sells their product. These dealers are the automakers ONLY customer; without them they cannot sell cars. How does shutting them out solve the automakers problem. The dealer is the only source of income for the automakers not a liability. Add in the lost parts sales and warranty service the dealer provides and closing dealers makes as much sense as closing grocery stores to help improve Kraft Food's bottom line.

A. The market is over saturated with dealers. Yes, dealers sell the product that GM makes, but there is too much competition between GM dealers. GM needs to keep dealers with the highest customer satisfaction ratings and the highest ranking service department. Dealers that have not met GM's training standards, or have unsatisfactory levels of customer satisfaction, are not in the company's best interest. Also, they are not being pushed out of business. GM is giving them 18 months notice, which gives them 18 months to prepare to sell something else. Most dealerships are privately owned franchises and those dealers don't have to go out of business. They will just need to prepare to sell something else.

How much haggle room is there at dealers?
Q. I'm looking at buying something like an 2003 Odyssey, and it would be from a Honda dealership. I know dealers mark up the price significantly, so I'm just wondering if anyone knows roughly how much haggle room there is on these things. The sticker price is $24,000.

A. Used car negotiating and mark up is different than new cars as stated above. A good range to use is a 3%-7% discount for your offer to purchase. I have a page and worksheet on my site if you want to read on a how to open negotiations and close a sale. The Odyssey is a great van. Good luck!
