Is there a name for currency collecting somewhat like there is for stamp collecting?
Q. I've hear that stamp collectors (or people that do various things with stamps) are referred to as philatelics (or something like that... I can't remember the term).. Is there a term for bill collecting?
Asked by RotundSwede - Fri Jun 13 16:07:55 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. One has to understand that there are coin collectors and currency collectors then there are numismatists who not only collect but also study and know the history of the coins or currency they have or would like to have. The same thing goes with stamps. philatelist's know the history and study stamps while collectors just collect them. Give the powers to be time and they will make up a name for currency collectors. They have already done it for token and medal collectors.

Can anyone help me use the Scott Catalog for stamp collecting?
Q. I bought the entire Scott Catalog on CD, and I'm new to stamp collecting. I'm trying to look up stamps in the catalog and I don't really understand the different columns, classifications, prices, etc. Is there some sort of index or key to understanding how stamps are listed? Thanks.
Asked by lindauerndc - Fri Jun 9 20:56:04 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I've never really used Scott, but I do know somewhat how it works. There are two price columns, one for how much a mint stamp would be and one for a used stamp. Every stamp has a Scott number, universally used to identify the stamps (For example the 1963 5 cent stamp of Eleanor Roosevelt is Scott #1236). Other than that I don't really know much. is a wonderful website full of philatelic info, qestions and answers, and other useful things. Happy collecting!

What is the future of stamp collecting? Will it be a hobby of older people?
Q. It seems to me that so few ppl write letters these days using stamps and that interest in stamps and collecting them are also competing with the internet and video games. Your thoughts? I will continue to collect stamps for fun, but am not sure that they will be a good investment if the number of collectors fall.

Will the value of postage stamps in stamp collecting go down when the forever stamp is introduced?
Q. I am an avid stamp collector now, so , I am curious about the what will happen to the value of past stamps with the upcoming forever stamp.

A. No it they have no affect on the prices of collectors stamps. They are stamps that will be used when stamps go up again. NE wayz if anything it will drive the prices up b/c you have collector stamps and the others will always be around.

A. The way any collecting works is that you take the long view. Someday you will be able to barter your way into getting a special stamp instead of just buying your way in. It's not just the stamp, it's the story of how you got it and how many years you had to wait. .

Q. In stamp collecting what are phosphor and helicon markings for and about ?

A. Phosphor is printed on the front of stamps in order to help automated machines process mail due to it fluorescing under ultraviolet light. It comes in various compositions and is difficult to spot without a UV light. Phosphor use began in Britain in 1959 and continues to date. Phosphor is treated much like ink (although it s often printed as a separate process) and consequently any of the errors associated with ink also occur with phosphor. Because phosphor is usually applied in vertical bands, possible errors include broad bands, missing bands, short bands and even double bands. Missing phosphor is either the result of phosphor running out during printing or sheets failing to go through when phosphor is supposed to be applied. The former… [cont.]

where can I order online a Stamp collecting album?
Q. That's blank and doesn't have U.S or Countries on them? I do random collecting :) (I'd like it to have that protective film over it okay?)

A. Why not get yourself a nice scrapbook? They have plastic liners for the pages and would work perfectly. You'd just need to get some stamp mounts, which if I'm not badly mistaken you can purchase from the post office. I've also attached a link for an actual album, though it's a bit more costly. The website I found it on has lots of options.

A. Yes. Have a modern map of the world handy and help your children find the countries on the map. If you know something about history, explain the significance of a person or building portrayed on the stamp. This is where Internet can come in handy.

A. There are lots of great albums available at - look for "albums," as that is the kind of book you are looking for. You should stronly consider joining the American Philatelic Society (APS) - - the magazine is great, and there are a lot of services available to members. Even if you don't join right away, the site is very useful for things like finding dealers and shows in your area. And even if you're not in the US, do consider joining anyway - APS has members in over a hundred countries! Another great stamp collecting site is - you have to register to post on the message board, but it's free, and you can read stuff as a "guest" without registering. Welcome to the hobby of kings/king of hobbies!
